12/25/2023 0 Comments Sunset key cottages key west fl![]() With regards to this past storm, the consensus was that it was going to dissipate, either way the USCG gave the order and we acting swiftly (as we always do) in notifying our guests and residence (again with safety in mind). ![]() My staff and I make every effort possible to inform of the evacuation and assist in relocations as soon as we're notified by the USCG. Our number one concern is the safety of our guests, staff and residence. It's always a challenge when these unforeseen circumstances arise while being a private island. Pertaining to this visit, you're correct in your statement that the USCG closed the harbor between Sunset Key and the main land of Key West. Our goal is to address your concerns so that we can ensure you have an exceptional experience on your next visit. Unfortunately, we did not meet your-or our own-expectations. We take great pride in ensuring our guest’s satisfaction. Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience you may have experienced. You indicated in your comments that Sunset Key evacuated due to Tropical Storm Elsa. I especially would like to alert anyone who is thinking about getting married here that in my opinion is way too much of a risk! More Show lessĭear X9803BBcarolineg: Thank you for taking the time to share with us your experience. And to top it all off, I did not receive any sort of credit or compensation… I somehow owed an additional $500, which I believe if you're calling yourself a 5 star resort, there should be some sort of compensation for the inconvenience. I just wish I had received honesty about the chances of evacuation when I called the hotel, or it was posted online. The storm only lasted about 6 hours, but my family was so upset because the vacation was not what we had imagined nor saved up for. We definitely would have never flown across the country to stay there. They put us up at the Opal Key, which - while has nice rooms - has no beach, a very small pool, and we were split up in hotel rooms rather than a cottage. We were to evacuate 48 hours before the storm even hit. The disclaimer they don't put on their website: Since they are a private island, the Coast Guard makes the evacuation calls, and will evacuate for even a tropical storm. We finally arrived after a long day of travel and about 12 hours later were told that the Coast Guard has made the decision to evacuate all of Sunset Key to Key West. They assured me that they are "monitoring the storm, but are not worried". Tropical Storm Elsa was forming the day we were leaving and I called the Sunset Cottages and asked what the plan was. My family and I flew from across the country and were supposed to stay 5 nights. If you are thinking about planning a trip here, I want to let you know about the high risk you are taking in booking here. I just wish I had received honesty about the chances of evacuation when I called the hotel, or it. ![]() ![]()
